On stopping smoking:

I have now been smoke-free for a week, and I can’t begin to tell you what a fantastic feeling it is. I don’t have to worry about whether or not I have enough cigarettes left when I go out, I don’t have to be self-conscious on the train that the person next to me thinks I stink of smoke, I don’t have to keep nipping out to the shop, and the house is finally losing its smell. The ONLY disadvantage I have found so far is that I have realised (with my improved sense of taste and smell) that Tesco’s value baked beans are not really very nice at all.

My life has been changed by a book “Allen Carr’s Easy Way to Stop Smoking”, which can be bought at: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0141026898/qid=1149760705/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl/202-8660109-8547063

The problem that people have with giving up smoking is that our society tells them how hard it is giving it up. In fact you are not actually giving up anything at all as there are no benefits of smoking. If you read this book and can give me one reason why you can’t or won’t give up (unless of course you were wise enough not to start smoking in the first place) then I’ll buy you a packet of fags!

I have always been a bit of a sceptic of self-help books, and my husband even more so! We were going to give up using the willpower method. However, I am sure that if we had, we would now still be thinking that we were missing out by not smoking, and we would be dreading going to a wedding this Saturday and not being able to smoke. Instead we are looking forward to our second smoke-free weekend.

I just wish I read this book sooner, I’d have saved a lot of money, and wouldn’t have been jeopardising my health for longer. I hope that by spreading the word I encourage at least one person to do the same.

Just want to say well done Mary, that sounds like a fantastic achievement. The idea that you are not giving something up but rather stopping something that is bad for you for so many reasons is a very positive thought to move foward into a smoke-free future.

    I’m so pleased for you!
