Self-Injury Awareness Day

Today is SIAD, or Self-Injury Awareness Day. All over the globe people and groups will be raising awareness about this difficult subject and at FirstSigns / LifeSIGNS we have been busy preparing for several weeks.

Wedge has worked hard on our SIAD page and spent a great deal of time giving quotes to the media (it’s fantastic that each year the media show increasingly more interest in SIAD!)

Of course we can only do so much – I’m confident we provide more information and resources for SIAD than any other organisation, but it’s down to our members and visitors to make use of everything we provide and do their bit to help raise awareness about self-injury.

So please do print our posters and stick them up wherever you can today. It’s not too late to email your local media or MP, or to slip a letter or factsheet through the door of your GP, school or workplace. You can find a template letter on our SIAD page and all our Factsheets on our publications page.

We’d love to know what you’re doing today for SIAD so please do leave us a comment, post on our Facebook Group or Page, Bebo, Myspace or our Message Board, or send us a reply on Twitter.

Thank you to all our members, supporters and visitors – have a great SIAD.

    Awesome Calvin, thank you.

Twitter takes some time to ‘get’ – the more you use it, the more it becomes fun, friendly and ultimately useful.

Protecting your Tweets from the whole wen (i.e. just letting your ‘followers’ see them) can be a good idea if you’re going to be very very personal in your tweets, but many people enjoy being open with their tweets and gaining more followers.

For very very personal matters, why not set up a closed / locked blog at LiveJournal or Blogger?

We really hope that SIAD helps more people (like yourself) reflect on self-injury and new ways of coping.

I really hope you like our main website.

    Cheers

I’m 46 male & self harm. I have been struglling with it for years. I gave in only last weekend. The first time really in over a year or more. I see my support worker later today but he doesnt really understand. This is the first year that I have ever heard about SIAD and only since I signed up for Twitter about a week or so ago! Since I heard I have used one of your posters as my twitter and youtube backgrounds. I tweeted the links to SIAD and NSHN etc last week.I have had to make my twitter private / protected for now , and so my tweets are only going to 3 “followers” who I dont know all that well yet. . I have prepared 3 tweets (saying I self harm this time and giving the links again) ,for today , but I cant seem to send them yet! Not sure if I can or should!? It’s a tough thing to do. (dont think I can @reply you about this either? ) So I wanted to ask here if you think I should tweet that I self harm myself or not? Guess you cant make the desicion for me but wanted your advice. Anyway, also joined your facebook group & page (I have no friends on there though) and have uploaded a copy of Wedge’s video The pain behind the pain to my youtube. (Hope that’s ok!?) I have also signed up for the forum and newsletter here. Oh & I also posted the link to http://www.firstsigns.org.uk/siad/ on my myspace page tw. Thanks Calvin
