Doing your best for you and others at this time

A few tips / suggestions for coping with the festive period:

Think positively: our thoughts heavily influence our feelings, so if you tell yourself it’s going to be awful then it will most likely feel that way. Focus on positive thoughts and actions.

Don’t panic: there’s so much to do at this time of year and maybe there are things you’ve forgotten or fallen behind with. It doesn’t matter. Focus on what’s really important, and don’t worry about the little things that are missed.

Take time out: your circumstances may now allow for much time to yourself, but ‘normal’ life still continues so take advantage of it. You still need to bathe, walk the dog, put the rubbish out – so use those opportunities to take some time to yourself. Washing up can be a great escape – turn chores into moments of quiet calm for yourself.

Appreciate people: you may be spending time with people you don’t know very well, or perhaps don’t even particularly like. But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy their company for a while; you might even learn something from them.

You’re not alone: it can be a lonely time for people who are struggling, but you’re not alone. We’ll be popping in and out of our Support Forum to offer support and friendly chat to anyone who needs it.

Take care of you: eat well, drink plenty of water, get enough sleep, and get out for a walk and some fresh air every day.

Enjoy yourself: even if you’re suffering from depression or low mood, that doesn’t mean you’re forbidden from enjoying yourself when you can. Having a bit of fun doesn’t mean you’re not depressed anymore, it just means you’re doing your very best to help yourself and seek happiness whenever and however you can.

Look forwards: don’t dwell on the year that’s past, but look ahead to a fresh new year.
